Simple Self-Care Tips for 2021

Self-Care 2021 Header

Last year was a test for mental health for sure! It taught us the value of regular self-care for our mental health. According to a survey by the Samueli Integrative Health Program, “80% of participants intended to be more mindful about regular self-care practices after the pandemic”. But sadly 46% of them reported struggling to find ways to maintain their physical, mental and spiritual health. If you find yourself struggling to maintain a healthy routine, you can fall back on some of these simple self-care tips…

Unplugging From Devices

Modern technology offers us many wonderful conveniences day-to-day, but not a lot of help with down time. For most, just some extended peace and quiet for simple pleasures, like reading a book or taking a nap, is enough to reset. But none of those things can really be enjoyed with your phone, watch or computer continually buzzing you. So try putting some distance between you and your devices. Turn things off or even take your you time outside. Either way, a break from each other lets you both recharge.

Upgrading Your Home Spa

Face masks and bubble baths are an oldie but goodie! However, they may be getting old after many months at home recently. So why not revamp your homemade spa experiences with more pampering? Try utilizing a diffuser to take in the combination of steam and your favorite essential oil while your bath water runs. For men, this would be a great time to give yourself a straight razor shave. And don’t skimp on the simple little things after your bath. Take some time to moisturize well from head to toe with your favorite body lotion (sunless tan anyone?). Then, wind down in bed wearing your softest comfy clothes—maybe even squeeze in a manicure!

Moving Your Body

Outside of physical benefits, many simple activities also reinforce mental health and can easily be achieved, especially with apartment living amenities. Whether it’s a run through the neighborhood,  play-date with your pup, living room pilates or a simple closet clean-out, anything that involves movement helps your body produce endorphins. These feel-good neurotransmitters of the brain have been linked to easing symptoms of depression, relieving anxiety, and even sharpening memory. A little movement goes a long way!

Building A New Skill

Want to learn another language or how to watercolor? In these times, we can learn almost anything for free and from home, thanks to modern apps and online resources. Experiment with poetry or journaling—a nice way to express yourself and exercise your mind. If you’re more into information than arts, you could finally subscribe to that podcast you’ve been eyeing. Just remember to stay engaged and avoid any multitasking.

Connecting With People

We always say “we need to talk more”. Well, self-care is your way make this happen! When you are distant from your tribe, you miss these relationships more than you realize. It’s because humans are inherently social and we need to stay connected. It’s simply good for the soul. Make “just because” calls with friends and family for some good lols, catch up and personal feel-good moments. If you’re tired of your electronics and you live in an apartment community, you literally have company right next door. Invest in your neighbors and you’ll never go without self-care for long!

Enjoy the simple pleasures at Portofino!
We believe self-care is essential to a healthy lifestyle and a happy home. The tight-knit neighborhood, modern apartment homes, and resort-style amenities at Portofino make it easy to build self-care into your daily life.

Ways to Tell It’s Time for a Two Bedroom Apartment

Two Bedroom Blog Header

We always say if “it feels like home from the first visit” it’s probably the one but we know sometimes it’s just not that easy. If you’re weighing the options for a two bedroom apartment upgrade, we know you are already considering expenses. But are you also factoring in happiness? Are you deciding for what better serves the simple pleasures in your life? Happiness is just as valuable as money. If you can relate to any of these scenarios, it’s likely time to move on to a two bedroom apartment home.

Your Family is Growing

When kids are in the picture, life happens quickly. Before you know it, you and your significant other are expecting and it’s time to start rethinking your living arrangements for the little one. Or perhaps life happens at the other end of the spectrum and you need to plan on moving in a relative. If your family grows, your footprint grows with it and a two bedroom could be a comfortable next step to accommodate everyone.

You’re Working from Home

Working from home is the new norm. If working from home will be a long-term or permanent situation for you, a two bedroom apartment offers some nice perks! A spare bedroom turned home office offers you a dedicated space for focus. It’s the ideal environment for improving your routines, organization, and therefore productivity. Plus, a separate work space establishes a firmer line (or wall) between your work and home life. Simply shut your door to shut it off for the day.

You’re Low on Storage

If your closets are bursting at the seams, that’s a pretty good sign you need to upgrade for more space. A larger apartment home generally comes with more storage but a full second bedroom offers a myriad of ways to store things, even if it’s used as a traditional guest room. Some good furniture and storage containers in the extra closet or under then bed can go a long way for tidiness. And if you consider yourself to be “extra”, there’s nothing more fitting than turning your bedroom into an oversized, walk-in closet. Yep, move into a two bedroom and you could have THAT closet.

Your “Me Time” is Missing

Everyone needs some alone time, right? It’s definitely time to move on if your current home is not conducive to some occasional personal time. If you don’t need the room for a growing family or regular guests, a second bedroom can double as anything you want. It’s a great host for hobbies and home workouts. Invest in some craft shelving for your indoor “she shed” or bring in a lazy boy and big screen for the ultimate “man cave”.

You’re Needing to Cut Costs

If you’re treading through some hard times or just looking to save more money, a two bedroom roommate living situation provides some helpful solutions. Inviting a friend or family member to share a lease with you allows you both to cut costs, gives you some company, and likely affords you both a nicer apartment home. By splitting expenses, you and your roommate can enjoy more of the simple pleasures of apartment living, like extra money in your pockets and better amenities to enjoy.

It’s not just the extra space you gain when you move into a two bedroom apartment home at Portofino in Lubbock, Texas. You gain a modern, cozy floor plan, a charming kitchen with stainless-steel appliances, rich custom finishes, resort-style amenities and of course, friendly neighbors.

The holidays are just around the corner and that means your kitchen will soon be working overtime! Fortunately, a little pre-cleaning now can go a long way for later. With these simple tidying tips and tricks, you can give your kitchen a full refresh before the holiday hustle begins.

Organize the Pantry

If you’re constantly playing hide-n-seek with items in your pantry or buying them multiple times unknowingly, it’s time to organize! This four-step guide by Elva Fonseca is everything you need. With Elva’s guidance, you’ll finally find that can of cranberry sauce you knew you had AND an easy way to hassle-free holidays. Luckily the floorplans at Portofino have spacious, walk-in pantries that make the reorganizing process that much simpler!

Organize the Spice Rack

For most people, the holidays mean lots of cooking, and lots of cooking means your spice cabinet will get a workout! But when your seasonings are fully stocked, clearly distinguishable and neatly organized, your holiday menu stays manageable and merry. Avoid spilling the salt or anything else in your spice cabinet this season and check out these 10 smart ways to store your spices by Brittney Morgan.

Organize the Pots & Pans

As a kitchen essential, we need them but pots and pans are always causing problems in the kitchen. They are bulky to store, trouble to pull out, and make the whole room look cluttered unless you give them a little more attention. Check out this guide by Rebecca at Mother’s Little Helpers to get them in check with 7 ways to organize pots and pans in your kitchen cabinets

Clean the Clutter

Those granite countertops aren’t just easy to clean, they’re easy on the eye, too! Show them off by clearing away everything that’s piled up in your kitchen, especially before the holidays add to it. Clear counter space is trending in home decor right now and we’re all for it, for good reasons—style and functionality. Stay on-trend and clear off your countertops with these helpful decluttering tips from Jenn Lifford.

Clean the Kitchen Sink

Cleaning the sink might not sound revolutionary, but if you’ve deep cleaned your sink before you know it’s power. For the cleanest sink you’ve ever seen, check out this guide by Elizabeth Voyles and limit those future headaches. Positive Perspectives on Living Alone, The One Bedroom Way

Living Alone Blog Header

No matter where you are in your pursuit of happiness, living arrangements can directly affect your success. If you are a student or young professional, there may be a time when living solo is beneficial for you and a one bedroom apartment simply fits the bill. While it is true living alone is not for everyone, there are many positive aspects to consider, which might explain why one-person households are on the rise. We’re calling it the “One Bedroom Way”, where easy living lets you focus on your goals and takes you to great places literally, financially and mentally. If you’re thinking about a move to “just you”, consider these points on the decision…

Privacy is Pivotal

Many rewarding social experiences can come from living with roommates but if it’s time to get serious about your life goals, it may be time to pivot for privacy. Living alone is sometimes thought to be for loners or anti-socials but it’s important to remember loneliness and solitude are two very different things. A little privacy can go a long way for focus. And many lone dwellers are still very active and social, it just takes self awareness and balance.

In your own apartment, it’s a lot easier to enforce personal limits and form better habits. According to the Psychology of Habits at theworldcounts.org, “40% percent of your actions are not conscious decisions but habits. So habits are a big part of your life.” You can socialize and host gatherings, but it all ends on your terms. The lights go out according to your schedule, not your guests’, and you can reset for your next day of grinding. After a hard days work, there’s nothing more refreshing than coming home to your own things, groceries and routines exactly where you left them.

Quiet Time is Crucial

Speaking of resetting, peace and quiet can go a long way. With more privacy at home, you can control your time and surroundings enough to designate more down time. Both privacy and quiet time can promote less stress, better work-life balance, and clearer decision making. If you are a student or young professional, you often need silence or a specific atmosphere to focus—doable when you live alone.

One of the most important benefits to living solo is it allows for more self-care. Relaxing and “turning off” for periods of time is necessary for good mental and physical health, and therefore productivity. According to a 2015 article, co-founder and CEO of Milanote Ollie Campbell was able to boost company productivity by 23% just by introducing periods of quietness into the work schedule. That “you” time is a powerful thing and sometimes it’s not easily accesible in multi-person living quarters.

Positivity is Paramount

The best part of any move is making it “home”. When you live solo, you can customize your apartment to reflect your personal style (release your inner designer) and create your own happy place. Curating your space to best fit your lifestyle allows for a better flow of activity and energy throughout your home which increases efficiency. Not to mention, when you get ready for a significant other, the stage is already set!

A one bedroom apartment is also often cheaper than roommate living. At places like Portofino, you don’t have extra expenses for fitness memberships or pool facilities either. Therefore, you’re afforded more funds for your favorite things and future aspirations. You are able to save for next steps in life or set back cushion for hard times. Living alone can be great for utility and very fulfilling. Your new apartment will bring excitement, a sense of renewal and fresh energy to your life. And when you feel good, you do good, right? This is definitely something thrive on.

Fun Ideas to Fill Your Home with Fall Feels

Fall Feels in Your Home - September Blog Header

It’s almost fall, y’all! Time to get excited for pumpkin spice and everything nice… in your mug AND in your home. If you’re looking for some refreshing new ways to fill your apartment with all the fall feels this season, check out some of our favorites idea below.

Dress Up Your Door

A beautiful display of rich color and texture in a wreath is one of the simplest ways to give your guests a warm welcome. Try to find florals that complement the color of your door to maximize its impact. If you live at Portofino, burnt orange, sienna and saffron hues will pop off our warm grey exteriors. And whether you decide to buy or diy your wreath, try weaving in some fabrics or elements from your home into the wreath, like one of your favorite scarves or some bold artificial stems. This is sure to make your wreath unique and more personal to your style, in turn making it feel more like home.

Go Natural

One of the best ways to invoke the spirit of fall is to bring the outside in. Make your arrangements unique by pairing traditional fall florals like mums or marigolds with found elements like pine cones, dried vines or pompous grass stems (yes, they are making a comeback). Fresh golden eucalyptus, gourds or even synthetic branches are easy finds that don’t take much effort to look good. Even autumn foods and ingredients like apples, cinnamon sticks, and rosemary in a wooden vase would make for a beautiful, festive table display.

Seek Seasonal Scents

Smell is one of the most delightful aspects of fall. Simply put, if your home doesn’t smell like a Thanksgiving pie is cooking, you’re doing fall decorating all wrong. Wink, wink. Smell is 9/10ths of the experience so it’s best to punch it up this time of year. Plug in a flameless candle or diffuser with your favorite scent to sink deeper into the season. Or good ole’ fashioned fall potpourri will do the trick, just pour it into your favorite West Elm inspired concrete vase or rattan basket for a modern vibe.

Pump Up Your Pumpkin Game

Pumpkins of all shapes, colors and sizes are an autumn must-have. Velvet, fabric or wooden selections are always adorable and give you the most bang for the buck. But if you’re a more traditional fall fanatic, you likely want fresh pumpkins. We’re loving the blue and green shades this year! Stacking pumpkins is a simple yet trendy way to display them. Or for some family fun and a graphic twist, carve your pumpkins with homely sayings, geometric patterns or other styles to match your home’s aesthetic. Life Hack: To lengthen the lives of your fresh fall pumpkins, soak them in a bucket of water and ⅔ cups of bleach. Your front porch will thank us later!

Fall for Portofino Apartments… We admire the warmth of the autumn season, but the family friendly lifestyle of Portofino in Lubbock, Texas keeps things this warm and comfy all year long. Our apartment community is comprised of multiple estate-sized family residences for a true neighborhood feel. You’ll fall in love with the simple pleasures of Portofino.

How to Know It’s the Perfect Apartment

Portofino Apts Blog Header - Perfect Apartment

When it comes to apartment hunting, finding ‘the one’ is sometimes easier said than done. With so many design choices and boxes to check, your search can become overwhelming and distract you from what’s most important. Fortunately, there are a few reassuring signs that can help! Let these tips guide you in finding the perfect apartment home, and you’ll know exactly when to take action.

Know Your Numbers

When considering finances for a new apartment, you definitely need to know your numbers. Take a thorough, critical look at your budget before you start looking and be modest in matching that amount. A good rule of thumb is to ensure the total cost of your rent is 30% or less than your gross annual income. This can help you maintain room in your budget for necessities plus savings, allowing for a better way of life in the long run. It’s truly disappointing to have a spare bedroom but not the ability to furnish it. Be sure to double-check your finances before you sign, and respect your limits once you’ve made the move. When you live within your means, it’s so much easier to budget for your best life!

Look for Room To Grow

More space is one of the most common reasons why people search for a new home, but more efficient space is the real key. So, try to think ahead. Consider different living scenarios and how this space will allow growth or accommodate you during life changes. When in doubt, we reference the rule of ‘number of tenants + one’. By designating extra space for your family, you have room to live comfortably with visitors or additions to your family, even if they are unexpected. Look for features that are easily adaptable, like an oversized pantry that can house storage overflow or a spare bedroom that could convert to a home office.

Note All The Feelings

Home is not a thing, it’s a feeling, right? If you get good feelings at first sight, that’s a good cue to reach for the keys. However, don’t let the ‘feels’ blind you. No matter how strong your admiration for the apartment, be sure to consider how the full expenses of rent and utilities blend into your budget before you follow through. Also consider the lifestyle this new home may afford you, with amenities or location benefits. At Portofino, a resort-style pool, fitness center, and dog park are sure to bring you priceless conveniences and joys in life. Ultimately, your long-term happiness rests in how well you can live in this new space, so make sure you’re feeling it!

6 Natural Fragrances Guaranteed To Make Your Home Fresh

Everyone’s home has a distinct smell; whether that’s because of the laundry detergent you use or the candles you burn. Aroma is critical to think about because the scent is one of the first things people notice when they enter your home or apartment. The more regularly you’re in your home, the more you become “nose-blind” to how your space smells. Many things can contribute to a good or bad smelling area, but with these simple tricks, you should be able to start smelling different and better smells.

Lemon and Rosemary

If you are looking for a clean smell, this combination would be your go-to. You can make this yourself; and can be done on the fly. All you need is a regular mason jar or something similar to put, water, rosemary, lemons, and vanilla inside.

Lilac

Lilac is the perfect scent for summer, and with just a few small ingredients, you could have your apartment smelling the part. The lilac room spray contains water, vodka, and lilac oil. Pretty simple, yet very useful for making any room smell good. If you choose to not make your own, you can buy a lilac room spray here.

Rosemary and Lavender Carpet Powder

If your carpets are dingy and dirty due to high traffic going in and out of your apartment, then you need this all-natural carpet powder. It requires baking soda, dried rosemary, and lavender oil. After you mix everything, you sprinkle it directly on your carpets and let it stay there for 15-20 minutes, then vacuum your carpet like normal.

DIY Plug-in Refill

If you have bought the nice plug-ins from retail stores, you know they smell amazing but are costly. There is an alternative to the sweet-smelling plug-ins you’ve previously purchased. All you do is fill an empty plug-in with water and whatever essential oil you want and voila!

Cinnamon-Orange Air Freshener

This air freshener is for the people who aren’t big candle people, and who enjoy fall scents year-round. This air freshener contains cinnamon oil, orange oil, water, and water-absorbing polymers. Wayfair carries a cinnamon-orange room spray if you would rather purchase one.

DIY Reed Diffuser

A reed diffuser will add fragrance to any room, and it isn’t difficult to make. You’ll need a glass container with a small opening at the top big enough to let out the aroma, rattan reeds, almond oil, alcohol and another essential oil of your choosing. Depending on where this reed diffuser lives, is how you choose the extra essential oil. Lemon works best in kitchen or bathroom spaces, while lavender would be fitting in a bedroom. Instead of the DIY route, you can buy a similar one here.

Apartment Safety When Leaving For Vacation

Summer is here, and that means vacations and graduations are in full swing. By this point, I’m sure that you have planned most of your trips, down to the places that you’ll stay, where you will be going and the restaurants you’ll be dining at. These things are important to think about when planning a trip. However, securing your apartment is something that should be on your to-do list as well.

Check your doors and windows

Checking your doors and windows a couple of weeks before you leave for vacation is essential. Doing this in advance will help you to figure out if all your door and window hinges are working correctly and to be proactive about it if something needs a repair. The farther in advance, the better, that way maintenance would be able to fix anything before you leave. Fixing these issues ensures that your apartment will be safe during the duration of your trip.

Checking your smoke alarms

Nothing is more frustrating than when your smoke alarm beeps to signal low battery, or it beeps while you’re cooking a steak. While on vacation you don’t want to lock up your room with a low battery smoke detector, especially if you live with other roommates or pets. By replacing the batteries in your sensor before you leave will ensure that you don’t bother anyone with the loud noises.

Pets are important too

If you decide not to board your pets during vacation, then you should make arrangements with a trusted neighbor or friend to keep watch of them while you’re away. Also, you should leave your veterinarians’ contact information with the person that will be taking care of your animals, just in case something was to happen.

Ask a friend to keep an eye on your place

Asking a trusted friend or neighbor to watch your apartment while you’re away is always a good idea, that way someone can keep an eye out and make sure nothing out of the ordinary is going on while you’re unable. Make sure that the people you’ve trusted have your number along with an emergency contact for you to call in case something were to go wrong.

These are the few things to do to make sure your apartment is safe as can be. After checking all these boxes, you are well on your way to full R&R mode.
